PRODUCT REVIEW: Slingshot by Woxom

I came across the Slingshot when digging through Kickstarter this spring and looking for another cool product to spend my money on. Designed and brought to life by a man named Charles Waugh, the project sought $20,000 in funding from Kickstarter backers, but ended up raising just over two and a half times that amount, bringing in $70,074.

Sold primarily as something to steady smartphone video, what I think is coolest is the cradle that holds the smartphone. Designed to fit any smartphone, from the (pre-5) iPhone’s 3.5″ screen to the Samsung Galaxy Note’s 5.3″ display, it kept a good hold on my 4.3″ HTC Sensation through being shaken upside down, so you can definitely trust this thing with your beloved smartphone. The cradle screws off from the handle using a standard 1/4″ tripod mount screw, meaning that you can take the cradle off of the handle to put it onto another tripod.

Pinch the legs together to get them out of the body of the handle in order to set up the built-in tripod, which is useful as long as you avoid tilting the phone too far forward (the threshold being around the angle in line with the handle), at which point the whole stand will overbalance. Still, it’s good if you want to take a video of something without getting your hands involved, have it hold the phone while you watch a movie,  or take a photo using the self-timer.
